“Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is better to relax by watching a movie or reading a book than by doing physical exercise.”
People, particularly those who go through busy days regularly, need relaxation. Some argue that watching a movie or reading a few pages of book is a proper way to relieve stresses and strains compared with doing physical exercise. I tend to argue otherwise.
First, a person’s mind cannot unload during watching a movie or reading, and conversely the person can unwind through doing physical exercise. A busy day of work or study strains a person intellectually and mentally, and watching a movie or reading, which demands thinking, does not ease the tension and instead burdens the person. If intellectual efforts need to be spent, how could it be considered as a way of relaxation? In addition, at the end of such a day, when the person maybe still preoccupied with thoughts and concerns, work-related leftover, and cannot take any more, any activity that provokes thoughts, for example, watching a movie or reading, is undesirable. Contrarily, doing sports, since it requires no complex thinking, is preferable. It diverts the person’s attention and vacates the mind, fully liberating the person.
Another advantage of doing physical exercise lies in its venue. When a person reads or watches a movie, he or she usually does it indoors. The roof and walls are the confinement, the artificial lighting and air tires the person. Things can be different if the person does physical exercise, which normally takes place outdoors. Sunlight is nourishing and the natural air is cleansing, and the open space sets the person free.
In addition, when a person does physical exercise, he or she may have company, and by contrast, the person is highly likely to be alone when he or she reads or watch a movie. A stressed person speaks to his or her sporting companions and channels frustration or sorts out ideas. Thiswould not happen if the person chose to read books or watch movies alone. There would be no listeners and no exit for feelings or thoughts.Although movies may be temporary diversions or books can bury the feelings, the struggle returns when a movie or book ends. In other words, the person is never truly relaxed.
In conclusion, physical exercise has a minimum of three obvious advantages over reading or watching movies. Therefore, doing physical exercise is a more recommendable way to rest.
